Tbilisi through the Centuries
About this experience
You will walk through the Sololaki and Kala districts, enjoy amazing architecture, make a wish at the tamada monument, climb up the stair-street to the mountain, and look at the Old Town from above. I will tell you the history and legends of colorful houses, ancient churches, and the unique clock tower. In 2 hours, you will fall in love with Tbilisi seriously and for a long time!
What to Expect
Immersing in the Past
The tour will start in the 'heart' of Tbilisi, at Freedom Square. You will walk through the streets of Sololaki, the most fashionable and expensive district of the XIX century. I will tell you the story of Georgian brandy and show you the house where the movie 'Romeo and Juliet' was filmed. You will see the mystical building at number 6, beautifully carved wooden balconies, and houses still in need of restoration. Unnoticeably inspecting the buildings, you will reach the Kala district, one of the oldest in the city. Check your physical shape by climbing the unique Bethlehem street-staircase and enjoy the stunning view of Tbilisi from the mountain. With all your soul, you will feel that you can endlessly stare at the Old Town and still discover something new: a tree branch, a patterned balcony, or a bright glaze of the tiles.
Main Temples and the Famous Clock Tower
You will see temples of several denominations peacefully coexisting side by side: the Georgian Orthodox Church of Bethlehem, the Atashga fire-worshipers temple from the 5th century, Armenian churches Surb Gevorg and Norashen, and the Great Synagogue. The people of Tbilisi have always lived as one big happy family, regardless of their religion. You will visit the house that local residents rightly called a 'kaleidoscope' and an art gallery of local craftsmen. And you will make a wish at the tamada monument, a reduced copy of which dates back to the 7th century BC. I will tell you the touching love story of the legendary Georgian actress Sofiko Chiaureli and reveal the secret of the gift she made to the city of Paris. You will see the basilica of Anchiskhati, the oldest church in Tbilisi, the clock tower created by the famous Georgian director Rezo Gabriadze, and other iconic landmarks. The tour will end at the famous Bridge of Peace.
