Into the Centuries of Tbilisi
About this experience
Tbilisi is a place where the West and the East meet, the fourth century meets the twenty-first. You will embark on an unforgettable journey through the centuries and feel the unique atmosphere of the city in its ancient buildings, streets, temples, and even baths. I will share with you historical knowledge and life hacks on how to spend time deliciously and richly on your own. I hope you will fall in love with Tbilisi just like everyone who lives in it!
What to Expect
Capital Through the Centuries
Our walk will start at Rose (Republic) Revolution Square, where festive meetings and processions took place during Soviet times, and in 2003 the Rose Revolution began right here. You will walk along the main avenue of the city, which began to be designed in the first half of the 19th century by order of the Russian emperor. I will show you many buildings of different eras and introduce you to stories and legends from the lives of the townspeople. So, the excursion program includes:
- Freedom Square - the central square of modern Tbilisi. I will tell you how and why over its two-hundred-year history it has changed many names: Staff, Theater, Paskevich-Erivansky. In Soviet times, the square was named Zakfederation, Beria, Lenin, and Freedom.
- Erekle Square (Royal Square) - here you will learn how in ancient Tbilisi, even before the appearance of newspapers, information exchange took place between different parts of the city.
- Vakhtang Gorgasali Square (Maidan) - the oldest "shopping" place in Tbilisi. Here I will tell you about interesting ancient traditions related to trade rules.
- Kashveti Church, located on Rustaveli Avenue. You will learn an ancient legend associated with this place and one of the thirteen Assyrian priests who arrived in Georgia in the 6th century as missionaries.
- Anchiskhati Church - the oldest church in Tbilisi. According to legend, Vakhtang Gorgasali began the construction of five churches in the new capital of Georgia founded by him. Anchiskhati is one of them. Despite the numerous destructions suffered during the conquests of the city by the hordes of Mongols, Arabs, Persians, and Turks, the church will delight you with its beauty and modest magnificence.
- Metekhi Church - the church and the fortress of the same name were built in this place during the reign of Vakhtang Gorgasali in the 5th century. The current church dates back to the 13th century. Here I will tell you different variations of the legend dedicated to the founding of Tbilisi.
- Abanotubani - the district of sulfur baths. One of the three first districts of ancient Tbilisi. You will see a bathhouse that was loved by Pushkin and Dumas.
- Waterfall in Legvtakhevi (Inzhiravaya Valley) - located in the heart of the ancient city. You can take great photos against the backdrop of the cascading water.
