Secrets of Tbilisi
About this experience
Every city has its own unique character. Some cities are strict, some are cheerful, some have a pungent aromatic scent of culinary delights, a clear spirit of past centuries, a charm, style, an original blend of old and new. What is Tbilisi like? Why did King Vakhtang Gorgasali decide to move the capital here? What attracts people of different nationalities and faiths to this place? On my tour, you will find the answers.
What to expect
At the beginning of our journey, you will see Meidan - one of the central squares of the Old Town, where Tbilisi was founded. In the immediate vicinity are the famous Sulfur Baths with volcanic springs that have survived to this day.
Other attractions nearby include Anchiskhati Church, built at the end of the 5th century, and Narikala Fortress. You will see old houses with carved balconies and feel the very spirit of history here.
Then we will look at Kote Apkhazi Street (formerly Leselidze) - a wonderful example of a medieval street that has preserved almost all the features of a bygone era.
Our next stop on the route is Freedom Square. It is the center of the city, the"oven from which they dance," that is, the starting point and beginning of all streets. Here stands the 19th-century building where the famous robbery took place in 1907, very important events happened here, and Rustaveli Avenue begins.
You cannot visit Tbilisi and not see Rustaveli Avenue - its main street. You will admire the houses, mostly built in the 19th century, and see that imperial style, but with unique local variations.
The modern center of Tbilisi is located at the foot of Mount Mtatsminda, on top of which stands the tripod-shaped TV tower. We will drive to the top of the mountain: you will have the opportunity to walk to the observation platform, which offers stunning views of almost the entire city and its surroundings. And if the weather permits, you will enjoy views of the Main Caucasus Range and Mount Kazbek.
Next, we will definitely visit Sololaki - an old quarter in the city center, where houses from the 18th and 19th centuries stand. The traditional architecture of the quarter allows you to feel the true Tbilisi color.
Our path then leads to the bustling Heroes Square. Here you will find the once tallest house in Tbilisi, buildings in the style of Soviet Constructivism, and the old territory of the zoo. I will tell you how different animals once escaped from there, fleeing from a flood.
We will also visit the Vake district, where the historical First and Second buildings of Tbilisi State University are located. It is quiet and cozy here - and you can enjoy interesting architecture to your heart's content.
We will pass through David Agmashenebeli Avenue and get an idea of what Tbilisi looked like in the recent past, in the 19th century. We will look at Railway Square and the historical Avlabari Square with the monument of Mimino by Zurab Tsereteli.
And we will be near the Metekhi Church, which stands on top of a cliff above the Kura River. Here is also a monument to the founder of Tbilisi, King Vakhtang Gorgasali, and stunning views of the Old Town below across the river.
Finally, the final point of the tour is the Tbilisi Sea. Of course, this is not a real sea, but a reservoir. In the summer, it is pleasant to swim in the warm water and sunbathe on the beach - besides, one of the most picturesque roads of the city passes through here.

Vano is erudite, intelligent, educated storyteller and a pleasant conversationalist. The tour was very enjoyable with his unconventional approach. Vano not only talked about the history, but also about the modern life of the city. Thank you!
