Mtskheta - a treasury of relics of the Christian world
About this experience
In one day, it is impossible to get acquainted with the religious history of Georgia, but you can cover the main places that will allow you to learn about the beginning of the Christian path of Sakartvelo. In the ancient city of Mtskheta and its picturesque surroundings, you will visit three monasteries - Jvari, Svetitskhoveli, and Samtavro - and understand why these places are so significant for the Georgian people. You will also enjoy the panorama where the streams of the Aragvi and Kura rivers merge, murmuring together like two sisters...
What to expect
Jvari Monastery and the symbol panorama of Georgia
In the monastery where Saint Nino and King Mirian erected the first cross in Georgia in the 4th century, we will talk about its legends and the literary works associated with these places. You will learn about the peculiarities of the architecture of the temple structures and about monophysitism - a doctrine that denies the 'genuine humanity' of Jesus Christ. And then you will enjoy the merge of the two rivers, which inspired Lermontov when writing the poem 'Mtsyri' - the area below Mtskheta and Jvari Monastery harmoniously complement the landscape.
Svetitskhoveli Monastery and the history of Mtskheta
Strolling through Mtskheta, you will learn about the city that previously existed in this place, founded in the 5th century BC by the legendary Mtskheta, hear about the medieval history of these lands, and visit Svetitskhoveli. This monastery, where the Chiton of the Lord and the relics of Andrew the First-Called rest, is equated in greatness and significance for believers to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Samtavro Monastery and the miraculous blackberry bush
The ancient streets will lead you to Samtavro - a complex consisting of the 4th-century Transfiguration Church, the small church of Saint Nino, and the bell tower. In Samtavro, we will tell you about the first Christian king of Georgia and his wife, Queen Nana, buried here. The monastery also houses the relics of the holy elder Gabriel of Samtavro and an extraordinary blackberry bush under which Saint Nino lived and preached.
