Journey to the Past
About this experience
Mtskheta is a city that was the capital of the Iberian Kingdom from the 4th century BC to the 5th century. This city and its surroundings are a cult and holy place for every Georgian, as it was here that Christianity was proclaimed the state religion in the 4th century by St. Nino. During the tour, we will immerse ourselves in the world of legends and antiquities of this city.
What to Expect
- Our walk will begin on the famous Georgian Military Road, which was admired by A. Pushkin, M. Lermontov, P. Tchaikovsky, A. Dumas Sr., L. Tolstoy, and many others.
- Turning off the road, we will drive to the places where the events described by Lermontov in the famous poem 'Mtsyri' took place and ascend to the Jvari 6th-century monastery – from here you can enjoy a charming view of Mtskheta: '...where the streams of Aragvi and Kura merge with a rustle like two sisters embracing...'
- In the city of Mtskheta, we will visit the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (Pillar of Life) – the cathedral patriarchal church of the Georgian Orthodox Church. Here lies the burial place of the relics of Christianity - the tunic of Jesus Christ and the mantle of the Prophet Elijah, as well as the relics of Andrew the First-Called.
- Next, we will stroll to the Samtavro Monastery, where the tomb of the first Georgian Christian king Mirian and his wife Queen Nana is located, as well as the relics of the holy elder Gabriel of Samtavro. You will have the opportunity to see and touch the blackberry bush under which St. Nino lived and preached. The 'blackberry bush', repeatedly cut down by vandals and reappearing again and again, is miraculous.

- Children under 6 years old participate for free, but if the group is fully booked, the child will have to sit on the lap, as the number of seats is calculated based on the seating capacity of the transport.
