The Sacred Mtskheta: Jvari and Shiomgvime
About this experience
Mtskheta is a dear and important place for Georgians, where the homeland begins. You will learn how the Georgian nation started in this ancient capital of Iberia, see the places where Georgian Orthodoxy was born, and hear the most interesting stories and legends about our hospitable land Sakartvelo. You will enjoy an exciting walk through the Georgia you've seen in photos and engaging tales about the people, traditions, and sacred sites.
What to Expect
"Embracing like two sisters"
Our first stop is the viewpoint near the Jvari Monastery, where you will be treated to a breathtaking panorama of the confluence of the two majestic rivers - Aragvi and Kura, and the views of Mtskheta. I will tell you when and how the Kingdom of Iberia originated here, why Georgians call their country Sakartvelo, known as "Georgia" in English. You will also learn about the two versions of which monastery is mentioned in the poem "Mtsyri". You will hear the history of the Christian faith emerging on Georgian soil. The fascinating excursion into the history of Orthodoxy will continue at the Jvari Monastery - the place where the first cross was erected in Georgia, where ancient energy can still be felt.
Georgia's Main Cathedral
You will visit the heart of Mtskheta - Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, where I will show you significant icons, valuable relics, and the burial places of Georgian kings. You will learn the translation of Svetitskhoveli, events connected to this holy place, architectural secrets of the temple, and why it was built here. You will also enjoy a leisurely stroll through the authentic streets of Mtskheta (by the way, you can buy the most delicious churchkhela here).
Shiomgvime - Almost a Hidden Gem
Our next stop is the remarkably beautiful monastery with a rich history, often overlooked by tourists. Along the way, you will also be treated to a unique view of the Jvari Monastery from a different, unusual angle, known to few tourists. And of course, you will learn various interesting facts about Georgia: for example, why girls are often named Nino and boys are named George, and why the rivers Aragvi and Kura are named as such.
You can arrange lunch or dinner during the tour at the charming old restaurant "Salobie" in Mtskheta. I will also tell you what this place is famous for and the translation of its name.
Organizational Details
- Transport costs are included in the tour price
- Lunch at the restaurant "Salobie" is paid for separately
