Tbilisi and Mtskheta - the history of Christianity in Georgia
About this experience
When visiting Georgia, it is impossible to ignore its religious history. The excursion program covers the main places that will allow you to learn about the formation of the Georgian faith. You will literally touch the history at the huge columns of the monument of Tsereteli, visit three temples in Mtskheta, and admire the modern cathedral of Tsminda Sameba. As a bonus, you will enjoy two extraordinary views: the Tbilisi Sea and the confluence of the Aragvi and Kura rivers.
What to expect
The faith of Sakartvelo from ancient times to the present day
You will follow the epochs of the development of Georgian Christianity and understand how it has influenced our culture. The best place to visualize this narrative is the cathedral of Tsminda Sameba, majestically towering on the hill of St. Elijah - it is visible almost everywhere in the city. On the territory of the cathedral are located a bell tower, 9 chapels (5 of them underground), the residence of the patriarch, a spiritual academy, and the cafe "Vody Lagidze", where you can taste the legendary brand, known far beyond the borders of Georgia. Next, we will visit the memorial "History of Georgia". You will find yourself among 16 tall columns of copper and bronze, depicting significant events in the fate of Sakartvelo, feel the breath of eternity, and admire the panoramas of Tbilisi.
Mtskheta - the second Jerusalem and the first capital
After exploring the scenes from the chronicles of Georgian Christianity, you will visit the places where they occurred. You will visit the Jvari Monastery, where St. Nino and King Mirian erected the first cross in Georgia. This monastery and the confluence of the Aragvi and Kura rivers at its foot were immortalized in the verses of Lermontov - you will enjoy this breathtaking view. After that, you will descend to the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, which was the main Cathedral of Georgia for a long time. Here you will see great relics: the robe of Elijah the Prophet, the Chiton of the Lord, and the relics of Andrew the First-Called. In this part of the excursion, there is also the Samtavro church, where that very King Mirian is buried, and you can pray at the relics of St. Gabriel.
After visiting the Jvari Monastery, lunch at salobio (a restaurant where A.S. Pushkin rested) is optional for the group.
