Riddles of Mtskheta, ancient capital of Georgia
About this experience
A trip to Mtskheta is an opportunity to simultaneously touch the history of the ancient world, the era of early Christianity, and the Middle Ages. The cultural image of Georgia is impossible to imagine without this city - Mtskheta is called the 'Second Jerusalem' for its incredible concentration of holy places and immense historical significance. During the tour, you will see all the most important sights and hear the history of these places in an accessible and engaging way.
What to expect
Jvari Monastery tour
The excursion starts with a tour of the Jvari Monastery (5th-6th century). This place on top of the mountain offers wonderful views of the valleys of the Kura and Aragvi rivers and their confluence. Here, everyone can feel the special energy of this ancient place - in pre-Christian times, a pagan altar was located here, and a huge tree grew, from the wood of which the first Cross in the history of Georgia was erected.
Walking tour in the city center
We will walk through the old narrow streets of Mtskheta and end up in the square with a magnificent view of the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century), the cathedral where the kings of Georgia were crowned, buried, and where their remains rest. Nearby Svetitskhoveli, we will visit the Samtavro Monastery, which currently houses an active women's monastery.
Introduction to Georgian cuisine
After the tour, you will have the opportunity to visit the famous cafe 'Salobie', where you will be offered traditional, including signature dishes of this cafe - lobio, baked in clay pots, pies with various fillings, and much more.
Who is this tour for
The walk will be informative and not tiring for both adults and children over 10 years old.
