Group Excursion to the Kazbegi Monastery - 'High above the family of mountains'
About this experience
This one-day journey will give you breathtaking mountain landscapes, introduce you to the ancient history of Georgia and its legends. Our route will pass through the azure Zhinvali Reservoir, the medieval fortress of Ananuri, an unusual mineral spring, and the Friendship Arch. And the final destination, of course, is the monastery at the foot of the great Kazbek - ascetic, but striking in harmony with the surrounding nature.
What to expect
Delight in Georgian landscapes
The road from Tbilisi to Kazbegi runs through the picturesque Aragvi River gorge: in the distance, you will see the legendary Jvari Monastery and the ancient Georgian capital, the city of Mtskheta. The first stop is at one of the Zhinvali Reservoir dams: you will admire its turquoise smoothness and learn about the origin and role of this reservoir. During winter, when the water recedes, you will see submerged churches. Furthermore, you will witness the confluence of two rivers (White and Black Aragvi), breathtaking views at the Friendship Arch, and an unusual mineral spring resembling a golden river.
Gergeti Church and Ananuri Fortress
You have definitely seen such postcards: an ancient monastery on a hill against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Beyond these views, you will travel to the village of Stepantsminda at the foot of Kazbek. From there, you will switch to jeeps to ascend to the 'monastery above the clouds', praised in Pushkin's verses. The journey also includes the well-preserved 16th-century Ananuri Fortress: behind its powerful walls, you will hear stories of local rulers - the eristavs of Aragvi.
The trip includes lunch (on the way back) at a cafe in the birthplace of khinkali.

Kazbek excursion - wow! It was incredibly beautiful and very interesting! The only thing I regret is that I went to Kakheti with another tour company, not with David.
