About this experience
A day trip to mountainous Adjara from Batumi is a must to fall in love with its evergreen slopes, ancient ruins, and waterfalls. The roads leading to the gorges will take you to the fortresses of Gonio and Gvara, to the bridges from the era of the great Queen Tamar. In 5 hours, you will learn about the 'Golden Age' of Georgia, local traditions, see the intertwining of Christian and Muslim cultures, and feel the warmth of Adjara.
What to expect
Best landscapes of Adjara
Our journey will take us along narrow serpentine roads, through places where rivers merge, evergreen peaks, and relic forests; surrounded by fresh mountain air and aromas. You will see two waterfalls: you can stand under one on a hot day, and you can descend to the second one if you wish, but in any case, you will admire its waters from the side.
Ruins of history among the mountains
You will cover the most significant locations of our region, and I will tell you about their historical path.
- Gonio Fortress - the oldest surviving fortress in Georgia. Built by the warriors of the Roman Empire 2000 years ago! Climbing the walls of the citadel, you will learn about its purpose and structure, about the treasures of Gonio found by a local resident.
- Gvara Fortress: You can still enter this watchtower fortress from the 6th century only by climbing a wooden ladder with 265 steps. From here, you will have a view of the narrow gorge cut by a river.
- Queen Tamar's Bridges Mirveti and Maho: You will learn how these stone structures managed to survive for 9 centuries and several earthquakes. Of course, I will tell you about the ruler after whom the bridges are named - about the fate and great achievements of Queen Tamar.
People and traditions of Adjara
Arriving at the Georgian-Turkish border, you will find yourself in Sarpi village, divided into two parts by barbed wire and a customs terminal. Here, we will talk about the Ottoman occupation of Adjara: you will imagine when relatives suddenly found themselves in different countries and understand how Georgians managed to preserve their national identity.
