What to expect
Cathedral Square and the founding history of Vilnius
In the middle of the last century, Paustovsky visited Vilnius and wrote about it in his travel diary "Wind of Change": "There are many good cities, but none like Vilnius, where beautiful architecture is so tightly packed in a small space and closely surrounded by rural simple landscape". We will start the walk where that beautiful architecture is concentrated - at Cathedral Square. You will see the main city cathedral and hear the legend of Vilnius founded by Grand Duke Gediminas. Then you will leisurely explore the well-preserved old part of the city, where romance and mystery intertwine.
"Postcards" of the Old Town
You will see Vilnius Castle, first mentioned in the 14th century in Gediminas' agreement with Riga, magnificent Gothic churches of St. Anne and Bernardine, the Holy Gates and Town Hall Square. You will enter the baroque style church of St. Theresa and the Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit. Finally, you will walk through the former Jewish ghetto area, examine Vilnius University, one of the oldest in Eastern Europe, and hear what was previously located on the site of the Presidential Palace.
