Program
You will hear the history of the city, which a few hundred years ago was the capital of the largest state in Europe - the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. I will explain, through examples, about the intersection of Eastern and Western culture and architecture of the city. I will explain why Vilnius is often called a Baroque city.
The walking tour starts from Cathedral Square and the chapel, the most significant place in Vilnius. You will see a stunning panorama of the city's hallmark - the Gediminas Hill, where the development of our city began.
The capital of the Republic of Lithuania is located in a picturesque valley at the confluence of the Neris and Vilnia rivers. You will see:
- Hill of Three Crosses;
- Cathedral Basilica, built on the legendary place where pagan gods were praised and where Vilnius was founded in 1323;
- adjacent Castle and Gediminas Tower;
- the gem of Gothic architecture - the elegant church of St. Anne (XVI century);
- Bernardine Cathedral and Franciscan Monastery;
- University - the oldest in the Baltic States and Eastern Europe, founded in 1579;
- Presidential Palace;
- Gates of Dawn (Sharp Gate) with the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary (XIV century);
- and many other objects.
During the tour through the narrow pedestrian streets of the Old Town, you will see the Town Hall, fragments of the fortress wall (XVI century), as well as Baroque-style buildings dominating in the Old Vilnius.
As a result, you will discover all the beauty of the multicultural, multiconfessional, tolerant throughout the centuries of the city of Lithuania. Welcome to Vilnius - a UNESCO city!
