You will walk through the winding streets of Vilnius and see the iconic landmarks of the Lithuanian capital: the Cathedral, the Presidential Palace, Gediminas Tower, the University, Town Hall Square, and the Church of St. Anne. Explore the Russian, Jewish quarters, and the artistic republic of Uzupis.
What to Expect
Main Sights of Vilnius
You will walk along the central artery of the Old Town - Pilies Street. Climb to the top of the ancient castle hill and visit the Cathedral, peek into the inner courtyard of the Presidential Palace, and stroll around the area surrounding the historic University. I will tell you why Vilnius is called the 'Northern Babylon', how it combines archaic and modern, pagan and gothic beginnings.
Walk through Artistic Uzupis
You will visit the former botanical garden and the ancient church on Latako Street. Next, explore the bohemian Uzupis district with galleries, artists, and cozy pubs. I will share the history of the emergence of the 'independent Republic' and the main tenets of its constitution. I will also show you the gothic Church of St. Anne, Town Hall Square, and the place where Dostoevsky stayed. You will enter the inner courtyards of the streets adjacent to the Town Hall and descend into the dungeons, where you will learn about the life of medieval craftsmen in Vilnius.
Russian Quarter and Jewish Ghetto
You will hear the tragic history of the Jewish Ghetto, visit the Church of St. Casimir and its unique underground crypt. Finally, you will stroll through the Russian quarter of the Old Town, visit the Holy Spirit Monastery, see the site of the execution of the three Vilnius martyrs, and one of Vilnius' main sanctuaries - the Gates of Dawn with a fragment of the ancient fortress wall.
