About this experience
This exciting two-day journey awaits you with a visit to beautiful places in Serbia, ancient cities and monasteries, stunning nature, rural life and hospitality, national cuisine, and locations from the life and work of the famous Serbian director Emir Kusturica.
Program
Day 1:
- Early morning departure from Belgrade to the town of Topola - the city of the leader of the First Serbian Uprising in the early 19th century. Visit the memorial city of the Karadjordjevic dynasty, founded by the patriarch of the Karadjordjevic dynasty at the end of the 18th century. Visit the Church of the Holy Virgin and the Monument to the People's Uprising.
- Next, head to Oplenac, where the main attraction is the St. George Church, the resting place of members of the Serbian royal family Karadjordjevic. St. George Church is done in Serbian-Byzantine style and is famous for its beautiful mosaics covering 3500 sq. m. - the work of Russian immigrant artists.
Enjoy the nature of Sumadija, the rustle of trees, and the chirping of birds. - Continue the route through the city of Cacak, home to 11 medieval monasteries and the picturesque valley of the Western Morava River.
- Lunchtime. To visit Serbia and not try mountain lamb on a spit means you have not encountered the smells and flavors of Serbian cuisine.
- Head to Bosnia, to the new masterpiece of Kusturica - Andricgrad. Explore the city dedicated to the Nobel laureate - writer Ivo Andric. By the artistic perception of Emir Kusturica, a completely unique city was created - from stone and memories. Memories of a country that no longer exists. The city exists outside of time.
Stroll along the banks of the Drina River. Visit the squares where monuments to Andric, Njegos, the great vizier Mehmed-pasha Sokolovic are located, and explore buildings of Byzantine, Eastern, and Austro-Hungarian styles.
If you are in Bosnia, you cannot miss the opportunity to try Eastern sweets and home-made coffee prepared in a cezve (Turkish coffee pot). - Return to Serbia to ethno-village "Drvengrad" - the actual address of Emir Kusturica, where "characters from his movies fly." Check-in at the hotel.
Get to know Drvengrad - the brainchild of architect-director Emir Kusturica. Experience true harmony with the surrounding world, visiting the wooden city for which the director received the Philippe Rotie Award.
If possible, watch the movie "Life is a Miracle".
Dinner, overnight stay.
Day 2:
- Take a trip on the "Sargan Eight" retro train (only in the summer period) along serpentine routes and through tunnels. Stops at lookout points where Kusturica filmed his movie "Life is a Miracle."
- After a 2.5-hour train ride, head back towards Belgrade.
- Have lunch in a village, where you will get to know a real Serbian village and hospitable hosts. Lunch is prepared following ancient Serbian recipes. While enjoying lunch, you'll listen to Serbian folk music, taste various homemade drinks - rakia and juices.
- Return to Belgrade late in the evening.
