About this experience
Emir Kusturica not only made films that the whole world is proud of but also built an amazing ethno-village in his native country - Drvengrad ('wooden town'). To get there, we will drive through the Mokra Gora National Park, visit the foothills of the Zlatibor mountain, and take a ride on a narrow-gauge railway that intricately winds through the rocks.
What to expect
Through the mountains, through the forest...
We will start our journey early in the morning and for about 3 hours we will drive through the most beautiful regions of western Serbia. We will pass through the Ovcar-Kablar Gorge and see the Morava River. We will also drive through the town of Uzice, located at the foot of Zlatibor mountain, the most famous peak in Serbia.
Kusturica's village
Drvengrad is truly a wooden town. Everything here is made of wood: not only the houses but also the sidewalks. Some of the houses, including his own, Kusturica bought elsewhere, disassembled them, and rebuilt them in a new location. I will tell the stories of the most notable ones and explain how Drvengrad resembles a typical Balkan village and what makes it unique.
The magnificent eight
From the local Mokra Gora station, a tourist train called the 'Shargan Eight' has been running on a narrow-gauge railway since the beginning of the 20th century. Why such a name? The answer lies in the route of the retro train, looping through tunnels and rocks. Along the way, I will explain why it played an important role in Kusturica's film 'Life is a Miracle'.
Tasty bonus
Our trip will be complemented by local cuisine in nearby restaurants. This part of Serbia is famous for livestock farming, so the local meat products are considered the most delicious in the country. Zlatibor prosciutto is one of the most famous brands in the region. They also grow raspberries here, so I recommend trying fresh raspberry juice.
