About this experience
During the tour, you will visit the famous religious landmarks of Armenia: the ancient monastery of Khor Virap, the place of imprisonment of Gregory the Illuminator, and the Noravank monastery complex. I will share stories and legends related to these historical monuments. Get ready to enjoy breathtaking views – both locations are situated in picturesque mountains!
What to Expect
Khor Virap – a symbol of Armenia
Our first destination is the Khor Virap monastery – the cradle of Christianity in Armenia. You will find yourself in a monastery-fortress, a monastery-outpost 40 km from Yerevan and less than a kilometer from the republic's border. Here, I will tell you about khachkars and how Christianity came to Armenia. Hopefully, we will be lucky with the weather – and you will be treated to a stunning view of Mount Ararat.
Introduction to Armenian wines in Areni
After taking in the beautiful view of Mount Ararat, we will continue our journey. We will pass by a small village where each house has a stork's nest. From early spring to the beginning of autumn, you can admire this pure and touching landscape up close. Next, you will find yourself in the wine village, where indigenous grape varieties Areni and Voskeat are grown. You will have the opportunity to try different types of wines: homemade wine from local residents, young sparkling wine in season, as well as wines from all over Armenia in a small tasting room in the cellars. You will also visit the Areni-1 cave, where the local caretaker will tell you about interesting artifacts found during excavations.
Noravank – monastery among red rocks
In the 12th-century Noravank monastery complex, you will hear the legend of its construction, follow the historical path of the sanctuary, and learn about the symbolism of the stairs. Enjoy the panoramas of the gorge with its sheer red cliffs and feel the tranquility and serenity of this place.
