What to Expect
The snowy giant guarding the ancient temple
Armenia is known for many attractions, but one holds a special place in the hearts of its people. That is the biblical Mount Ararat, which we will approach as close as possible. The monastery Khor Virap is located an hour's drive from the capital, near the Turkish border, offering the best view of the country's symbol. 'Khor Virap' translates to 'deep well.' You will learn about the monastery's history and the fate of Gregory the Illuminator, the first Catholicos of Armenia. You will explore the adornments of the chapel and the Surb Astvatsatsin church.
The bird cave: voices of ancestors
Our next stop is the Areni Cave, dating back to the early Bronze Age. Archaeologists have discovered agricultural tools, the world's oldest leather shoe with laces, a skirt made of reeds, and a winery here. We will discuss other artifacts and the lifestyle of the ancient inhabitants of these lands.
A fairy-tale tiered church
Next, we will visit Noravank - the treasure trove of medieval Armenian architecture. In the church of St. John the Baptist, among the red rocks of the Gnishik Canyon, you will see the richly decorated tomb of Prince Orbelian and the only depiction of God the Father in Armenia. In the church of the Holy Mother of God, you will admire the magnificent dome, unusual staircases, and reliefs.
At the end of the tour, you will have the opportunity to taste and purchase Areni wine, made from the oldest grape varieties, which is produced at several wineries in the eponymous village.
