About this experience
Of all the places without which Armenia cannot be known, the main one is the magnificent Mount Ararat. In the Khor Virap monastery, you will admire the mountain to which Noah's Ark clung, hear about faith and strength of spirit. You will be impressed by the gorge where the Noravank monastery stands, and its medieval architecture. And you will also be transported back millennia in Areni and appreciate Armenian kebabs and wine.
What to Expect
Living History of Armenia
In the south of the country are concentrated some of its most picturesque and iconic places - here you will get acquainted with chronicles, culture, and nature. You will visit:
- Khor Virap Monastery - a fortress from the 17th century at the foot of the biblical Mount Ararat. You will enjoy a magnificent view of the snowy giant, delve into the times of the emergence of Christianity in Armenia, and descend into the dungeon where Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned.
- Areni Cave, or Bird's Cave, where we will arrive by serpentine. This is a Klondike for archaeologists, where evidence of life in the Stone and Copper Ages is still being found today. Observing the karst vaults, you will learn about the most interesting artifacts of antiquity.
- Noravank Monastery, which stands on a plateau surrounded by bizarre red rocks of the canyon. You will understand the uniqueness of the image of God the Father and the Church of Surb Karapet, delve into the features of Armenian architecture of the Middle Ages, and the stone crosses "khachkar".
Armenia on a Plate and in a Glass
After exploring the monasteries and the cave, you will be treated to a wine tasting at the winery in the village of Areni - the wine here is made from the eponymous black grapes. Local guides will acquaint you with the production and treat you with red, pink, and white wines. If you like the drinks, you can buy them.
