About this experience
Join me on a journey to the ancient Christian sanctuaries, hidden among orange-red rocks, to learn their history and transport yourself back in time for a day. You will see the decoration and way of life of the monasteries, admire ancient khachkars, visit the town of Areni, and taste local wine. But most importantly, you will feel connected to the great Christian heritage.
What to expect
Khor Virap - a symbol of Armenia
From Yerevan, we will head towards the place of Gregory the Illuminator's imprisonment - the ancient monastery of Khor Virap. Along the way, the biblical giant Ararat will serve as a landmark, the landscapes outside the window will impress with their picturesque beauty, and during the warm season, you can try local fruits along the way. The name of the temple translates as "deep pit," and in this "pit," the revered Christian saint once served his sentence. You will see the decoration of the monastery, and I will tell you its history.
Noravank Monastery Complex
Afterwards, we will head to the town of Areni, near which the Noravank monastery is located. We will stroll through the streets of Areni, and I will explain the value of the active Noravank for Armenians, where monks still live and there is a gymnasium and seminary. You will walk around the monastery grounds and see ancient khachkars, made by the architect Momik - huge carved stones on which stone crosses were made using hammers and chisels.
Wine Tasting in Areni
Upon returning to Areni, if desired, we will have lunch there and then go for a wine tasting. The grape varieties used to make this wine only grow in this province of Armenia and nowhere else in the world. You will taste a variety of wines, including fruit and pomegranate, and have the opportunity to buy some to take back to Yerevan, embracing the spirit of the ancient Christian sanctuaries.
