Kutaisi. History and Nature of Imereti
About this experience
During the excursion, you will enjoy the beautiful nature of the city and learn important and interesting facts about the history and culture of the region. We will talk about Kutaisi during the time of Colchis, the Abkhaz-Imertian Kingdom, and nowadays. I will also tell you what sets the cuisine of the Imereti region apart from all Georgian cuisine.
Program
- We will visit ancient Orthodox churches - the Gelati Monastery of the Mother of God (11th century), Motsameta (also called the Monastery of St. David and Constantine), and the Bagrati Cathedral (11th century). I will tell you their rich history and explain their significance.
- We will stroll through the oldest streets and districts of the city, where buildings from the pre-Christian era have been preserved. You will learn about the history of Imereti and Kutaisi, about the time when the city was the capital of the state of Colchis, about the Argonauts who, according to legend, came to Colchis for the Golden Fleece to take it back to Greece, about the Abkhazian Kingdom, and other important historical milestones and folklore that have shaped the chronicles of the city.
- Then, in one of the non-touristic establishments of the city, we will have a small feast where you will enjoy the gastronomic masterpieces of Georgian cuisine while I talk about the peculiarities and best dishes of Imeretian culinary, the origins of winemaking, and much more.
- It is impossible to visit Kutaisi and overlook the karst caves - Sataplia and Prometheus Cave. Each has its own history, and I will tell you when and how they were discovered.
Organizational Details
- Transfer on a comfortable seven-seater Mercedes Vito minivan is included in the price.
- Additional Expenses: entrance to the karst caves (Sataplia - about $5.5, Prometheus Cave - at the exit, you can take a boat ride on an underground river - in this case, the cost is $15, without the boat - $8).
- In addition to excursions, I will gladly give advice on life and travel in Kutaisi and Imereti.
