About this experience
A tour of the renowned wine region will immerse you in the ancient epochs of Kakheti and introduce you to the basics of local culture. You will visit medieval fortresses that remember the Kakhetian kings and ancient monasteries founded by legendary preachers. And at the wineries, you will discover the secrets of winemakers and taste several varieties of the sacred drink.
What to expect
Ujarma Fortress and New Shuamta Monastery
Journey begins with a visit to the fortress, which is the remains of a once huge and impregnable city that served as the capital of the Kingdom of Kakheti under King Vakhtang Gorgasali. According to legend, it was here that Georgia's patron saint, St. Nino, established one of the three crosses and preached Christianity to the local mountain dwellers. Moving along the slopes of the picturesque Gombori Pass, you will visit the active women's monastery New Shuamta, where you will hear the beautiful but very sad story of Queen Tina.
Telavi and its surroundings
On a stroll through the Old Town, you will learn about the history of Kakheti's capital, tour the Batoni Castle - one of the residences of the Kakhetian kings, and make a wish near the 900-year-old plane tree. And of course, you will enjoy the views of the sunny Alazani Valley.
Wineries: traditions and tastings
Winemaking is an integral part of the ancient culture and history of the region, which is why you can truly understand and fall in love with Kakheti only through the mystery of producing the signature drink. At the wineries 'Vaziani' and 'Shumi', you will learn about the traditions and some secrets of Kakhetian winemakers, and of course, taste several types of wine.
During the tour, I will offer you a choice of several cozy Georgian cuisine restaurants, where we can have lunch.
