About this experience
You are about to embark on an exciting journey to northern Georgia, at the foot of Mount Kazbek, along the famous Military-Georgian Road, which passes along the ancient trade route leading from central regions of Georgia to the North Caucasus and Russia. I will introduce you to the history of local ancient fortresses and temples, you will admire the sky-blue lake and try the legendary mountain khinkali.
What to Expect
History of the ancient trade route
"Dariali Road" - along the valleys of the Terek and Aragvi rivers - has been widely known since ancient times. The first mentions of the road date back to the 1st century BC, when the Greek traveler and historian Strabo, visiting Iberia (the ancient name of Georgia), wrote in his essay that this path, laid through the mountains, is difficult and harsh, as the one following it must climb to the peaks along narrow paths, where two people cannot pass.
Stunning nature and history of the Great Caucasus
You will see the well-preserved Ananuri fortress of the 13th century, the ancestral castle of the princes of Aragvi. You will see the Zhinvali reservoir and picturesque gorges surrounding the sky-blue lake amidst the mountains, the famous ski resort Gudauri and the Cross Pass. You will ascend to Sioni Cathedral in the eponymous village, where you will enjoy magnificent views of the gorge, where the famous Terek River originates.
The town of Kazbegi and the ancient Gergeti Trinity Church
The final point of our route is the town of Kazbegi, currently known as Stepantsminda. Here you will face a challenging climb to the Gergeti Trinity Church. You can rent a car and cover the distance in 40 minutes, or hike - it will take about one and a half hours one way. However, I assure you, the efforts will be justified by the breathtaking views and the atmosphere of the ancient Gergeti church, the history of which you will also learn on the tour. During the trip, we will stop for lunch in Kazbegi or the village of Pasanauri, at a cozy and tasty home restaurant where they serve excellent Mtiulian (mountain) khinkali. In addition, you will be able to taste dishes made from trout caught from the Aragvi River flowing right by the restaurant.
