What to expect
Ancient pagan city Uplistsikhe
You will drive on a modern highway, through the city of Gori, the center of the ancient Georgian province of Shida Kartli, where you will see grand monuments of the Stalinist era, including the Stalin Museum, which you can visit if desired. After that, you will head to the ancient cave city, one of the first in Georgia. The rock-hewn Uplistsikhe emerged at the end of the II - beginning of the I millennium BCE, in its historical path there were times of ups and downs, and in the 19th century it was finally abandoned. Today it is a multi-layered archaeological site, one of the most important monuments of Georgian culture, which is worth visiting for all travelers who want to better understand the ancient history of Georgian land.
