About this experience
Embark on a tour of Jerusalem's historical and architectural heritage: in the city center, you will see houses that have survived from past centuries, dating back to the time of the Ottoman Empire, and other significant structures. I will share the stories of these places and the people connected to them.
Long ago, when the Ottoman Empire ruled half the world, both poor and wealthy Jews bought land in the Holy Land. Some used their savings, while others took out long-term loans. They drained swamps, built houses, paved roads, and defended themselves from bandits. They called their new homes 'nahlaot' (estates). Today, these houses are the heart of the city.
Itinerary
I will show you the districts of the 19th century, where you will find the Bukharian children's home, synagogue of Jewish resistance fighters, rabbi's houses, and the birthplace of the 6th President of Israel - Itzhak Navon. You will see ancient wells and old eucalyptus trees, synagogues, and cultural centers. Lastly, we will visit the famous Mahane Yehuda Market - the oldest market in the country, established in 1887.
During the Hanukkah holiday, there is an option for an evening tour to admire the ancient houses illuminated with light.
Sukkot in Nahlaot
At the end of the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), the sound of hammers resounds in all Jewish homes. Jews build sukkahs - the necessary attribute of the Sukkot holiday. What is this holiday? What is the market of the 4 species? We will see sukkahs of all shapes and sizes, learn about holiday customs, and explore the history of the neighborhoods.
