About this experience
Seeing the whole Old City in one day on foot is not an easy task, but it's very interesting. We will visit 4 churches, 2 synagogues, and 2 mosques, as well as a panoramic viewpoint. I will answer many questions and explain the unexplainable in a clear way. I have visual aids and enough teaching experience for these purposes. But you won't be bored.
Program
- The tour will start at 10 am at the Jaffa Gate of the Old City. Upon your request, we will either walk on the walls of the Old City (Built in the 1540s by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent) or stroll through the Armenian Quarter. The quarter has existed since the 4th century, peaked in the early 20th century with up to 15,000 inhabitants living there, now home to no more than 500 people, we will talk about the reasons for its current decline.
- Next, we will visit Mount Zion, the Dormition Church (Assumption of Mary), and learn the secret of the Vatican Spot. Here at the Church of the Assumption of Mary, we will visit the excavations of the house of John the Evangelist, where the Virgin Mary lived for 15 years after the Ascension of the Lord.
- On Mount Zion, we will see the Tomb of King David and the Room of the Last Supper, learn why it is called the "Church of the Three Religions,” and finally understand the similarities and differences between the Jewish Passover and Christian Easter. We will discuss the secrets of the Passover Seder.
- We will visit the Jewish Quarter, the Cardo, take a rooftop walk, possibly climb the Temple Mount, to the place where the creation of the world began, where the Jewish Temple stood for a thousand years, and the Muslim shrine has stood for thirteen hundred years.
- We will approach the Western Wall and try to understand why Jews from all over the world come to Jerusalem to pray at the Wall.
- From the Western Wall, we will walk through the Muslim Quarter to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. I will tell you the story of the ladder on the facade and how the Holy Fire descends, and introduce you to the Gatekeeper of the Church - Wajeeh Nuseibeh.
We will discover that today's Jerusalem and Jerusalem in the time of Christ are in different places and levels, and finally understand why the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Golgotha is located in the center of the Christian Quarter, not outside the city, as it was in the Evangelical period.
