Discover the Essence and Authenticity of Tbilisi
About this experience
Do you want to see that city with lace balconies and narrow hilly lanes, with authentic courtyards and 'living' history? I promise - in 6 hours you will find the key to the heart of the real Tbilisi! You will walk through iconic places from the Sulfur Baths to the puppet theater, past ancient temples, a waterfall, and unusual sculptures. I will fill the walk with interesting facts about the history and architecture, about the character, traditions, and Georgian cuisine. And a tasty bonus will be an hour-long wine tasting in an ancient cellar.
What to Expect
A Journey through the Ages of Tbilisi
In 6 hours, you will embark on a great journey into the history of Tbilisi - I will tell the story in an easy and engaging way. Key sights will bring the past to life.
- Starting from Metekhi Plateau: admiring the panorama of the Old City and the Narikala fortress, we will talk about the origins of Tbilisi. You will learn about the first settlement that existed here even before the arrival of Vakhtang Gorgasali, and about the deeds of this king.
- Descending, we will walk towards Meidan Square. In this ancient place, you will imagine the bustling trading Tbilisi of the Great Silk Road era and learn about the underground bazaar.
- Next, we will visit the Sulfur Baths, once visited by Marco Polo. I will not only reveal the legend of the falcon and the founding of Tbilisi, but also less-known details: for example, why out of 65 baths only 15 remain and why they have such names (from simple No.5 to fancy 'Royal' and 'Variegated').
- In the same area, you will stroll through the Legvtakhevi Gorge to a real waterfall, and on the way, you will admire the elegant Tbilisi balconies - I will explain what they were used for in different eras and why two identical patterns could not be found.
- We will not overlook modern Tbilisi buildings: you will cross the Bridge of Peace and learn about its beautiful symbolism, as well as what locals think about the glass skyscraper and unusual pipes in Rike Park.
Places of Faith
My route through Old Tbilisi will cover the main religious structures of the capital. In the 13th-century Metekhi Church on the plateau of the same name, you will learn about the architecture and types of Georgian churches, as well as the prison past of this place. At the Sioni Cathedral, we will talk about the main Georgian saint, Nino, as her cross is kept here; about the saved icon of the Mother of God, and why it is allowed to step on burials here. You will be plunged into even deeper antiquity at the Antshiskhati Church, where I will tell you about the miraculous icon. And the spiral staircase and narrow lanes will lead you to the elegant Juma Mosque.
Flavors and Color of the Warm City
A proper walk through Tbilisi is inconceivable without stories about Tbilisians, Georgian mentality, and cuisine! To help you better feel the life of the city dwellers, I will show you the famous Italian yards, talk about City Day, the colorful Tbilisoba holiday, and the jokes written on the tower of the Rezo Gabriadze Theater. By the Tamada monument, you will uncover the secrets of Georgian feasting - believe me, it's a whole science! In the middle of the walk (just when you want to take a break), you will have a wine tasting in a 17th-century cellar, where only exclusive wines are kept. The tasting lasts for an hour without limitations and with comments from the winemaker.
Organizational Details
There are no additional costs. The wine tasting for my travelers is conducted free of charge.
