About this experience
You will get acquainted with historical monuments and samples of the Belle Époque. You will hear interesting facts about the Hungarian capital and taste pastries in a cafe that remembers the times of Franz Joseph. The shining trams that run along the winter Danube will create a special mood for you. And of course, I will immerse you in the colorful world of Christmas markets - some of the most charming in Europe in terms of fun, convenience, and price.
What to Expect
Fascinating sightseeing tour through the center
We will meet at your hotel or at Vörösmarty Square. And then - St. Stephen's Basilica, the Danube Promenade, the magnificent Parliament building, and the entire architecture of the Beautiful Era, which can finally be thoroughly examined in winter. During the walk, I will explain why Buda and Pest look so different, why the palace in the very center of Pest is named after Matilda, and in its hall portraits - Clotilde, why at every step here you have to remember the year 1896 and why the city needed a metro line in the 19th century.
'The holiday is coming to us'
The entire Advent season a sparkling tram follows one of the routes, resembling that same advertisement with New Year's caravans. You will see how wonderfully it looks on the already fairy-tale streets of Budapest. Special attention will be paid to the Christmas markets. They are open daily from November 27 to December 31, but on December 24, starting from noon, the city will be quiet and deserted. In the labyrinths of market rows, we will find excellent hot wine from barrels, roasted chestnuts, signature sweets, and arrays of authentic decorations to suit any taste.
In the middle of the program, we will stop for coffee with pastries and warm up in a cafe that has been operating since the days of the gray-haired Emperor Franz Joseph and the beauty queen Elizabeth.
Organizational Details
- 2021 regulations: entry to markets and baths is based on presenting a vaccination certificate, masks are mandatory on transport and in stores, museums and restaurants have no limitations.
- In Budapest, it is usually not so much cold as chilly at Christmas (the Danube does not freeze). Therefore, we will walk with breaks for coffee (and not just coffee). Be sure to take care of warm footwear - that's crucial! You may leave your jacket unbuttoned, skip the hat, forget the gloves. But the boots must be serious.
- Budapest is responsible for other pleasures, and it will not disappoint!
