About this experience
During this historical walk, we will cross all of Berlin from west to east: I will explain how the significance of the city has changed over time and which statesmen and social groups influenced its transformations. You will discover traces of old architecture among the newly rebuilt buildings and immerse yourself in the history of bygone eras.
What to Expect
Left Bank: from Electors to Chancellors
We will start the tour at the old market square, around which Frederick II settled the persecuted French Huguenots. Refugees had a significant influence on Berlin's culture, and I will share with you exactly how. Then you will cross Bebel Square, known for the burning of over 20,000 books by authors deemed unacceptable by the regime after the Nazis came to power. We will bypass the Humboldt University, one of the leading universities in Europe, visit the New Guardhouse, and stroll through the Museum Island. One of the most famous museums in the complex, the New Museum, houses the bust of Nefertiti. Interestingly, across from the sculpture of the powerful woman of a bygone era, another powerful woman of our time resides - Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel.
Right Bank: Birthplace of the City
On the other side of the Spree, we will pass by the main city hall and the oldest buildings in Berlin that have been preserved since the 13th century - Chapels of the Holy Spirit, Church of St. Mary, and through the Nikolai Quarters - the founding place of Berlin, approach the ruins of the medieval Franciscan Monastery. The final point will be a remarkable cafe that has been operating since 1621. Many famous personalities were guests here. Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann wrote fairy tales here, Napoleon Bonaparte drank coffee, and Max Otto von Stirlitz met with Pastor Schlag. After the tour, you will be able to add your name to this long list.
