About this experience
Kronborg, or Hamlet's Castle in the city of Elsinore (Helsingør), is one of the most beautiful and visited castles in Denmark. Here you can find everything we love about medieval royal residences - mysterious turrets, huge throne rooms, paintings and tapestries, damp cellars and dungeons. And, of course, echoes of past centuries and ghosts of literary works that stir the imagination.
What to Expect
Journey to Elsinore
We will drive through the northern districts of Copenhagen and head to Elsinore along the North Zealand coast - one of the most impressive routes in the country. Along the way, we will stop in the fishing village of Sletten Havn, where you will admire the old architecture and magnificent landscapes.
Hamlet's Castle
Kronborg is located on the shores of the Øresund Strait in Elsinore. We will explore the castle from the outside and definitely go inside. You will see:
- One of the largest ballrooms in Denmark
- King Christian IV's favorite resting chambers
- Rooms for entertainment games
- A huge and very well-preserved kitchen
- The place where slaves and counterfeiters were kept
- The castle church where both kings and fraudsters prayed
- Magnificent views of the strait and the Swedish town of Helsingborg
History, Legends, and Shakespeare
- I will tell you the story of the castle's construction and its continuous architectural changes.
- I will explain why Shakespeare chose Kronborg as the setting for "Hamlet".
- We will recall other legends associated with the castle. The main one is about the Danish hero Holger Danske, who slumbers with his sword in hand.
City Stroll
We will visit Elsinore, the oldest trading town in Denmark on the west coast of the strait. We will discuss how it became the country's second most important city. You will see the beautiful churches of St. Mary and St. Olai, market squares, and the flower market. We will stroll along the historic pedestrian street with its cozy small houses and feel the unique atmosphere of lively medieval times.
Organizational Details
- The tour includes: the services of a guide, transfer in a comfortable Toyota Verso car
- The maximum number of passengers is 4 adults; the car can accommodate 2 children under 8 years old without changing the tour price.
- We will drive to Elsinore for about 1 hour, spend about an hour in the castle and the city, and 15-20 minutes in the fishing village.
