About this experience
In the largest Renaissance palace in Scandinavia, you will learn about the lifelong project of King Christian IV and a monument to the iconic period when Denmark held a dominant position in the region. Let's talk about the coronation of monarchs, the exquisite implementation of Dutch Renaissance style, and the founder of the Carlsberg brewery, who saved a national monument.
What to expect
Frederiksborg - witness of fateful events
I will meet you in Copenhagen, and in just half an hour, we will arrive in the small town of Hillerod, home to a Scandinavian Renaissance masterpiece. On the complex grounds, you will immediately appreciate the scale of the project, built half a century before Versailles. I'll tell you about the era of King Christian IV, Denmark's high status on the political stage, and the peak of its rivalry with Sweden. You will learn how important events for the whole of Northern Europe were intertwined in Frederiksborg's history and realize the significance of the monument where monarchs were coronated from the 17th to the 19th century.
Harmonious grandeur of the royal residence
In the palace halls, you will learn about what took place in the ceremonial chambers, visit the exquisite Throne Room, gaze out from the royal windows at the graceful palace park with baroque landscape architecture. You will stroll along the central alley and visit the Coronation Church, where it seems like time has stopped. I will comment on how the concept of decoration embodied restrained northern luxury and Dutch Renaissance style, which architects were invited to participate, what the castle went through over four centuries, and what role a Danish businessman and patron, the founder of the famous Carlsberg brewery, played in its history.
