About this experience
I will try to show you Venice in all its beauty, help you feel its uniqueness and originality. You will learn all the most interesting things about the history, architecture, and traditions of the city - from ancient wars and Crusades to gastronomy and fashion.
What to expect
We will see the Grand Canal, where more than 100 beautiful palaces and temples are located, visit the famous St. Mark's Square, and, of course, those secluded places without tourists, where the native Venetians live. Quiet and very beautiful. The "red light district" quarters of medieval Venice, bridges, alleys, and squares with extraordinary stories and names. The most breathtaking view of Bacino San Marco, stories and magnificent treasures of temples, the unique lion's mouth for reports, gondola workshops, and much more.
You will learn about the history of the Venetian Republic, its formation, heyday, and decline, the features of local architecture (completely unique "Venetian Gothic"). I will tell you about the most important events that changed the course of history: Venice's participation in the Fourth Crusade, the reconciliation of the Pope and Frederick Barbarossa, wars with Genoa and the Turks, and others.
And you will also hear:
- where the name "Lamborghini" comes from
- what "zoccoli" are
- how Venetian ladies became blonde
- where the "shameful run" began and ended
- where the original reliefs on the Palazzo Camerlenghi came from
- how the names Rialto, Breasts, and Fists bridges originated
- where, when, and under what circumstances carpaccio and bellini were first prepared and why they are called that
In addition, the tour may include a visit to the islands of the Venetian Lagoon.
- San Michele Island - the first on our way - is the island of the dead, the famous Venetian cemetery, where our compatriots - Brodsky, Diaghilev, Stravinskys - rest.
- Next is Murano Island, where there are workshops and factories (fornaci) for the production of world-famous Venetian glass and magnificent galleries of works of art by legendary glassblower masters. You will watch their work accompanied by a detailed explanation of techniques and characteristics and even participate in the process!
- Burano Island - a fairy-tale fishing village of lace-makers, with a "falling" bell tower and colorful small houses that dazzle us with their brightness and charm, creating a festive atmosphere.
- Torcello Island - the cradle of Venetian civilization. There are two ancient temples with amazing Byzantine mosaics, the best in northern Italy.
On all islands (except the cemetery, of course), you can have a wonderful and very delicious lunch or dinner in restaurants famous for their fish cuisine.
Depending on your wishes and what you have already seen and want to see, I will adjust the route.
