What to expect
Queen of the Adriatic
The tour will start at St. Mark's Square or in the Rialto district. You will go to the origins and learn who, when, and why came to the famous lagoon, what drove these people, and how they managed to survive. I will tell you how Venice became one of the most powerful states in the entire Mediterranean and the reasons why it later declined. Then you will take a stroll through this delightful city, full of secrets, legends, and mysteries. So, on the tour you will see:
- Rialto - the historic district of Venice, settled in the distant 9th century. The English poetess of the Victorian era Elizabeth Browning in 'Portuguese Sonnets' writes about this district: 'The soul of Rialto is trade.' I will show you the real Venetian market, where literally everything is traded. I will also tell you about Casanova, the 'speaking' column, and the Venetian hunchback.
- Grand Canal - the most famous Venetian waterway. Starting from the lagoon at the station, it passes through the entire city, repeating an inverted letter S.
- Cam Po (Square) Santa Maria Nuova - you will learn the history of the cozy church dedicated to St. Mary the Miraculous.
- Cam Po San Giovanni e Paolo - the most beautiful square in the city after St. Mark's. You will see the eponymous church, built by the Dominicans, one of the most significant in Venice. I will also show you the 'Doge's Palace,' where outstanding representatives of the Republic are buried, and the equestrian monument of Bartolomeo Colleoni, who saved the city from enemy aggression.
- Cam Po Santa Maria Formosa - here I will tell you about the city's holidays, state conspiracies and conspirators, courtesans, and the Renaissance era.
- Bridge of Sighs - you will see the legendary bridge over the Palace Canal, built by Antonio Conti in 1602. According to legend, the name was given to it by Lord Byron himself.
- St. Mark's Square - the main city square. It is here that the main city festivities traditionally took place, including the Venetian Carnival.
