About this experience
It is impossible to imagine Mtskheta without the ancient shrines of Jvari, Svetitskhoveli, and Samtavro. However, I invite you to discover other equally interesting and significant places in the vicinity of the city. You will touch the history of Georgia's Christianization, enjoy the views of Mtskheta and Tbilisi from the Zedazeni monastery, immerse yourself in the soul of Shiomgvime, learn about the fate of the Kvatahevi monastery, and trek to the ruins of the fortress of ancient rulers - the Pitiakhsha.
What to Expect
Zedazeni Monastery - up into the mountains
The tour will start with the 6th-century Zedazeni monastery, which is visited by few travelers due to its lesser-known status and poor road condition. Yet, this is where the history of Georgian monasticism begins. In addition to delving into history, you will be rewarded with a panorama not only of Mtskheta and Jvari but also of Tbilisi.
Places where the soul resides
In a narrow sandy gorge lies the medieval abode Shiomgvime, visiting which imbues a sense of special tranquility. Here, at the foot of steep cliffs, you will learn about Assyrian father Shio, the secrets and spiritual life of the monastery. Another place of amazing peace and seclusion is Kvatahevi Monastery. Its walls, over 700 years old, will tell you about the bloody invasion of Tamerlane and the love of King Luarsab and Queen Tékle, who were crowned here.
Stories at ancient ruins
Visitors to Georgia know Mtskheta as the ancient capital of Iberia, but its rulers lived a little further - in Armazi. You will head to the ruins of this pre-Christian royal residence to learn about Georgian paganism and the events that took place here during the life of Saint Nino. In addition, you will enjoy a short trek through the picturesque gorge to the ruins of the fortress of Pitiakhsha, where you will hear the history of these powerful feudal lords and admire the panoramas (40 minutes, uphill but not extreme).
