Uncharted Mtskheta
About this experience
It's impossible to imagine Mtskheta without the ancient shrines of Jvari, Svetitskhoveli, and Samtavro. But I invite you to discover other, no less interesting and significant places in the vicinity of the city. You will touch the history of Georgia's Christianization, enjoy the views of Mtskheta and Tbilisi from the Zedazeni monastery, immerse yourself in the soul of Shiomgvime, learn about the fate of the Kvatahevi monastery, and trek to the ruins of the fortress of ancient rulers - pitiahshay.
What to expect
Zedazeni Monastery - high up in the mountains
The excursion will start from the 6th-century Zedazeni monastery, which is not often visited due to its lesser-known status and poor road condition. However, this is where the history of Georgian monasticism begins. Apart from delving into history, here you will be treated to a panorama not only of Mtskheta and Jvari but also of Tbilisi.
Places where the soul resides
In a narrow sandy gorge lies the medieval abode of Shiomgvime, where you feel a special tranquility when visiting. Here, at the foot of steep cliffs, you will learn about the Assyrian father Shio, the secrets and spiritual life of the monastery. Another place of amazing peace and seclusion is Kvatahevi Monastery. Its walls, over 700 years old, will tell you about Timur's bloody invasion and the love of King Luarsab and Tékle Saakadze, who were married here.
Histories at ancient ruins
Guests of Georgia know Mtskheta as the ancient capital of Iberia, but its rulers lived just a bit further - in Armazi. You will head to the ruins of this pre-Christian royal residence to learn about Georgian paganism and the events that took place here in the life of Saint Nino. Additionally, you will enjoy a short trek through a picturesque gorge to the ruins of the fortress of pitiahshay, where you will hear the history of these powerful feudal lords and admire the panoramas (40 minutes, moderate climb).

For those interested in visiting important but often overlooked historical and cultural attractions. Our group was...

Levan is an intelligent, calm young man. Despite not being a very good storyteller, the tour was still successful. We were a bit unlucky with the weather, but Levan showed us the beauty and grandeur of ancient temples and monasteries, which are literally in the clouds and impossible to reach by ours...
