About this experience
We will take a walk in the Old Town, breathe in the air of the Middle Ages, admire the tiled roofs of the Lower Town from the observation platforms of the Upper Town. You will learn why in ancient times our city was divided into two legally separate cities, who lived in the Upper Town and who in the Lower Town, and why the 'Wall of Enmity' was built in medieval Tallinn. I will immerse you in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages, vividly tell you about the conditions, lifestyle, and laws of the city in that difficult era.
What to expect
- You will hear real stories about the residents of Tallinn and urban legends, in which 'the tale is a lie, but a hint in it...'
- Learn why they say that Tallinn 'limps'.
- We will walk in the Royal Garden. Yes, there is such a garden in Tallinn - the Garden of the Danish King! I will tell you its history.
- You will admire the houses where knights and merchants once lived. You will learn how they lived, what they were treated with, and how the townspeople were punished in the Middle Ages.
- Next to the magnificent building of the Town Hall - a witness to the almost 800-year history of the city - you will find out who presided there and how life was governed by the Hanseatic city of Reval.
- Upon request, we can enter the Town Hall, stroll through the most beautiful halls, admire the original preserved household items and furnishings. I will talk about the way of life, about the moral concepts and honor in the Middle Ages, and how masters and artists embodied these concepts in their creations.
- And many, many more things will be told to you by the houses and streets, fortress walls and watchtowers of medieval Tallinn.
As a result, you will discover the history of the Old Town, enjoy centuries-old architecture, and learn about the gap - not only temporal but also cultural - that separates modern residents of Tallinn from their medieval ancestors.
