About this experience
During the tour, I will tell you about the life and customs in medieval Tallinn, about its poor and rich residents. You will get acquainted with the main buildings of those times and learn about their purpose.
Route
- We will meet at the Viru Gate, walk a little further, and I will tell you about the fortress wall. At the Hellemann Tower, you will hear a story about the purpose and structure of the fortress towers.
- Next, we will walk along the alley to the portals of the monastery, and I will tell you about the Dominicans, education in the Lower Town, and the role of the Dominicans in this matter.
- On Holy Spirit Street, we will approach the almshouse. In the Middle Ages, the poor and destitute lived here. At the Great Guild Square, you will learn about the unity of merchants and craftsmen in guilds and trade unions. I will explain why this was necessary.
- Then we will stroll along Pikk Street to see the Canute Guild and the St. Olav's Guild, and understand who was accepted into which guild. You will also learn about the structure of a residential house, streets, pavements, and lighting.
- A lot of interesting things happened on Town Hall Square. It is appropriate to talk about the activities of the magistracy here, how the day passed in the square, who did what here. Special attention will be paid to the pharmacy and its role in the Middle Ages.
- The next stop is on Wheel Well Street. Here we will talk about water supply and hydraulics in the city.
- Walking down Knight Street, we will visit another almshouse and the executioner's house. Here awaits you an interesting story about the role and activities of the executioner. We will also look at the execution site, and I will tell you about the city gates.
