About this experience
The ancient Tivoli is located less than half an hour's drive from the Italian capital - it would be sacrilegious not to visit! I will show you fairy-tale villas with luxurious gardens and fountains, ruins of an ancient temple and a waterfall over a cliff, as well as tell many amazing stories about this town.
What to Expect
Governor's Palace
You will visit Villa d'Este - one of the most famous Italian villas and a hydraulic masterpiece. Strolling through the alleys, you will learn the history of the magnificent park with over a hundred fountains, which became a prototype for Versailles and Peterhof, and the construction of the villa from stones of monastery walls. I will tell you unusual facts about the owner - Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este - and the creative genius of the architect Pirro Ligorio, and also guide you to the water organ, where water jets form music, the Fountain of Romulus, representing Rome in miniature, and the legendary Fountain of Neptune - the pinnacle of Bernini's creativity.
White Walls, Temples, and Cypresses
Next, you will take a walk through the historical part of the city, which dates back to Ancient Rome. It is believed that in ancient times the great prophetess Sibyl of Tibur lived here, who predicted to Emperor Augustus the coming of the infant Jesus Christ, "who was more powerful than all the Roman gods." We will see the rectangular outline and Ionic columns remaining from her temple, and talk about life in ancient Tibur.
The Roar of the Waterfall and Villa Gregoriana
The last stop will be Villa Gregoriana with a natural 120-meter cascade formed by the Aniene River and praised by many artists. Our eyes will behold an example of a "romantic garden" with waterfalls, grottoes, cliffs, and steep paths. I will tell you about the significance of underground galleries that changed the course of the river, and the nearby Temple of Vesta.
