Welcome to Rome!
About this experience
Agree, it's hard to fit the grand history of the capital of the Roman Empire into a couple of hours. No matter how many times you visit here, its ancient ruins and legendary emperors, the secrets of the Vatican and the masterpieces of Bernini will call you back. On the overview walk, I will try to make you truly fall in love with the unparalleled Rome, and the images of the Colosseum, the squares of Venice and Spain, the Trevi Fountain, the Castel Sant'Angelo, and St. Peter's Basilica will become not just recognizable symbols for you, but living bridges to the incredibly rich past of the Eternal City.
What to expect
The Colosseum - the largest amphitheater of antiquity
Getting to know Rome is best started with the Colosseum - one of the most grandiose structures of the Ancient World and a symbol of the former greatness of the empire. We will explore it from the outside, and I will tell you about the scandalously famous emperor Nero, associated with the image of the Antichrist, and the reasons for the construction of the Colosseum. About the numerous entertaining spectacles, which reflect the mentality and values of the ancient Romans: gladiator fights and animal hunts. As well as about the fate of the amphitheater in the Middle Ages and Modern times.
The Arch of Constantine and the Roman Forum
Near another magnificent monument - the only triumphal arch built in honor of victory in a civil war, you will learn how Christianity became the state religion in the Roman Empire. From the street of the Imperial Forums, you will look at its main square - the Roman Forum. You will hear legends about the founding of the city and vivid facts from the lives of Julius Caesar, Octavian Augustus, Cleopatra, and Mark Antony. We will discuss what the ancient Romans ate and drank, why all roads lead to Rome, and who first called the capital the Eternal City.
Piazza Venezia
At the foot of the Capitoline Hill, you will see the Altar of the Fatherland, dedicated to the first king of united Italy - Victor Emmanuel II. You will see the Venetian Palace and the balcony from which Benito Mussolini liked to speak. Wandering through the narrow medieval streets teeming with life, you will see the city through the eyes of great architects and artists who embodied their dreams in the marble of churches, palaces, and fountains of the Renaissance era. I will tell you where Michelangelo's first burial place was, introduce you to the delightful theatrical style of the Baroque of the 16-17th centuries in the Church of the Twelve Apostles, and on the lower tier, you will encounter secrets dating back to the 6th century!
Trevi Fountain
Conversations about the famous architects of the Baroque era - Bernini and Borromini - will lead to the magnificent Trevi Fountain, adjacent to the Palazzo Poli. You will learn about the concept and embodiment of the monumental ensemble, as well as how the Russian princess Volkonskaya and Gogol are connected to the largest fountain in Rome. And if you want to follow tourist traditions, throw a coin for good luck.
Piazza di Spagna
From one of the Romans' favorite squares, you will see the famous Spanish Steps, the travertine steps of which remember the confrontation of Spanish and French ambitions in Italy. At its top, you will have a stunning view of the city from the Pincian Hill, where I will tell you the legend of the ghost of Messalina, the wife of Emperor Claudius. In the historic café "Greco," you will learn about its famous visitors, including Gogol, Andersen, Casanova, Goethe, Shalyapin, Anna Pavlova, Federico Fellini, and many others! Here we will also talk about the appearance of the coffee drink in Italy and the opening of the first tea house in the city.
Castel Sant'Angelo and the Vatican
Passing through the Bermuda Triangle area in the city center, where women and money disappear (Condotti Street with signature boutiques of world fashion brands), you will approach the Tiber River, from where you will see in all its glory the Castel Sant'Angelo, which in 2000 years has managed to be a tomb and fortress, a prison and a papal residence. And in the end, you will be awaited by the Vatican with the legendary St. Peter's Square framed by Bernini's colonnade. You will see the very balcony of the Papal Palace from which every Sunday the Pope blesses all those gathered in the square. You will learn about the mystery of the burial of the apostle Peter and other mystical legends that literally saturate the largest historical Christian church in the world.
