The Road to the Gray-Haired Kazbek - a Journey That Will Haunt You
About this experience
The path to the extinct volcano-five-thousander is not just a picturesque route for professional mountain enthusiasts and lovers of active relief. This is a journey along the historic Georgian road, where you will learn about the times of Queen Tamar's rule, internal wars of eristavs, invasions of Persians, and philosophical walks of wanderers: both common people and world-famous poets. Even if you are in Georgia for a short time, a trip to Kazbek is definitely worth it! We are waiting for you - it will be interesting, delicious, fun, and stunningly beautiful!
What to Expect
Ancient Residence of Eristavs and Sunken City
First stop will be the 15th-century fortress of Ananuri, built in the picturesque valley of two rivers - Aragvi and Vedzatkhevi. You will hear the amazing story of the main stronghold of the Military-Georgian Road, which was never taken by storm. And you will learn about numerous wars between local feudal princes - eristavs. Then you will find yourself at the shores of the Zhinvali Reservoir, where we will talk about the reign of Queen Tamar, the sunken historical city, and the settlements of ancient people according to archaeological excavations.
Breathtaking Panorama and Mineral Spring
Heading further north, near the Cross Pass, you will encounter the popular ski resort of Gudauri - the highest populated place on the road. You will visit the fantastic viewing platform called 'Friendship Arch', where you will admire Soviet mosaic panel and, most importantly, you will enjoy unforgettable views of the mountain landscapes and gorges. Also, along the way we will take you to the beautiful mineral water spring 'Vedzas Ts'kali'.
Long-Awaited View of Kazbek and Ascent to the Holy Trinity Church
In the village of Stepantsminda, you will have a close look at the mountain giant, accompanied by local legends of its origin. Then we will offer you two options: climb to the church or walk to the waterfall. The Gergeti Church against the majestic Kazbek is one of the most popular photo spots. Besides the landscapes, the building is interesting as the only cross-domed church in this area. Here we will recall Pushkin's famous poems 'Monastery on Kazbek' and talk about historical events - Persian invasions and relics hidden in the high-mountain church.
🥘 The program includes a stop for lunch at a cozy and not overly touristy restaurant serving delicious national cuisine.
