About this experience
Kecskemet, located 80 km from the capital, is famous for its apricot brandy, majolica, and unique museums. Szeged, near the borders of Serbia and Romania, captivates with traditional cuisine and pastries. Most importantly, these beautiful cities are true architectural gems where you will explore the diversity of Hungarian Art Nouveau, blending Western, Moorish, and folk motifs.
What to Expect
Kecskemet: Art Nouveau in the Heart of the Hungarian Plain
- In the historical center, at Kossuth Square, you will visit the Secession-style Town Hall, the 14th-century Church of St. Nicholas, the oldest in Kecskemet, and the largest Baroque monument on the plain part of Hungary - the Ascension Church.
- At Jozsef Katon Square, you will encounter another example of Art Nouveau - the City Theater building.
- On Rakoczi Boulevard, you will explore the city's landmark - Cifra Palota Palace adorned with majolica panels. Across the street, you will appreciate the original appearance of the synagogue in Moorish style with Gothic elements.
- At Freedom Square, we will pay attention to the Calvinist Gymnasium and the Lutheran Palace with an unusual church (also examples of Secession).
- I will introduce you to the only example of classicism in Kecskemet on Jokai Street - the church of the Piarist Order.
- Finally, we will stroll along Rakoczi Street, where you will admire new examples of Art Nouveau and neo-Classicism - the Palace of Justice.
Szeged: Hungary's third-largest city, built in Art Nouveau style
- At the Secheni Square, you will visit the Town Hall, the city's most colorful building, and next to the statue of King Byly I - the interesting Iron House.
- Passing by the world's only monument to the Gypsy composer Pista Danko, we will reach the beautiful German Palace decorated with patterns of different colors and the National Theatre.
- Next, you will encounter the city's largest Art Nouveau monument - Count Palace, followed by the Reformed Palace. Before your eyes, the magnificent four-story Secession-style Moricz House will appear.
- At the St. Stephen Square, you will linger at the water tower of Szeged and later examine the decor of the Goldschmidt Palace.
- I will show you how Hungarian, Moorish, and Mediterranean elements intertwine wonderfully in the architectural ensemble of synagogues.
- In addition, you will admire the fairytale-like Reok Palace - one of the most beautiful local attractions. Next to it, you will discover another Art Nouveau wonder: the Ungar-Mayer Palace with a domed corner tower. You will be amazed by the decor in the Reichel Palace.
- Through the Martyrs of Arad Square, we will reach the Cathedral Square with the magnificent Votive Church. There, you will see the Demetrius Tower and the Serbian Orthodox Church.
- We will conclude the tour on Karas Pedestrian Street, where there will also be plenty of interesting things. Afterwards, I will suggest dining at one of the colorful Hungarian cuisine restaurants.
