About this experience
If you think you know Budapest inside out - I will disappoint and delight you. In the Hungarian capital, there is a 'terra incognita' even for locals - the district of Józsefváros, which was called the sixth continent at the beginning of the 19th century. What is this mysterious quarter, why are there so many luxurious buildings, villas, and other magnificent ghosts of the past? You will hear all about it on the tour.
What to expect
Incredible architecture
Józsefváros has come a long way from a district of craftsmen to a place beloved by the Hungarian aristocracy. You will explore the preserved palaces of Festetics, Wenckheim, Esterházy, and Torley. You will discover old villas of doctors and chimney sweeps, peek into the inner courtyards of houses, and admire luxurious entrances with stained glass and mosaic floors. Additionally, we will see the National Museum, the Radio House, and the ivy-covered 'Architects' Nest.' We will visit Miksa Kalman Square, where young people like to gather, and sit on 'Brad Pitt's bench.'
Light and entertaining stories
I will tell you about the most beautiful city library and tears in a coffee cup, about Juliet's balcony and a heron with a pebble in its paw. I will reveal how to make a rich man richer and how to quit playing cards, what 'ondulation' is, and where to catch a golden fish. I will show you modern and antique cafes, pharmacies, pastry shops, and even a forge. I will decipher the Masonic signs that we will encounter along the way and explain how Józsefváros is connected to a yellow coat, a widow's veil, milk with brandy, and Andersen's fairy tales.
