About this experience
Our route will pass through the places of the dukes of one of the oldest princely families in Italy. They ruled Ferrara for half a century, and getting acquainted with the city is inseparable from the history of the Este family, which is interesting in that it reflected the characteristic features of Italian civilization and is therefore important for understanding Italy as a whole.
What to Expect
Get to know the city's symbol - visit the 14th-century castle. Like any ancient castle, it hides many secrets and legends. You will hear the most interesting stories about the passions and intrigues in the lives of the dukes. Inside the castle, you will see the prison associated with the tragic love story of Hugo and Parisina; kitchens where sumptuous banquets were prepared; the private apartments of the dukes with 16th-century frescoes, and much more.
Walk through the streets of the old town. You will walk along the famous Street of Arches, preserving the authentic medieval architecture. In the square where the magnificent Cathedral is located, I will tell you how to decipher architectural elements and learn to read the facades of buildings like stone books. We will talk about how Ferrara developed during the rule of Este from the 13th to the end of the 16th century, and what treasures of art from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance the dynasty left here.
Culinary traditions of Ferrara during the Este period. Italian culture is impossible to imagine without national cuisine. And each city is a separate page in the Italian gastronomic encyclopedia.
