About this experience
I will show you that politics is not boring, but alive, interesting, and fascinating. In the very heart of the city, you will learn about the times when Florence was an independent republic, see the connections between the external and internal policies of the Florentines. And in the luxurious palace, you will understand the intrigues and conflicts of the Medici with other wealthy families.
What to expect
Piazza - the center of political life
We will start the tour at Piazza della Signoria - the political heart of the city since the Middle Ages. I will tell you who ruled Florence before the Medici. I will explain who the Priors were and the warring Guelphs and Ghibellines. You will learn about another Dante - an influential politician and ruler - and hear about Girolamo Savonarola, whose burning is commemorated here by a marble plaque.
We will also talk about the square itself, which is a true open-air museum. You will admire originals and copies of famous statues: Neptune Fountain by Bartolomeo Ammannati, a copy of David by Michelangelo, a copy of Judith and Holofernes by Donatello, Perseus by Cellini, etc. - and uncover their symbolic meanings.
The home of the mighty Medici
Next, we will head to Palazzo Vecchio. The place of its construction and form are not random - we will understand together what the reasons are. Externally, it is an impregnable palace, but inside it will amaze you with its luxury and splendor: every detail praises the Medici dynasty.
I will introduce you to the history of this family, which has been overthrown and expelled from the city more than once. You will understand how, thanks to connections and wealth, the Medici gained power and what they had to do for the title of dukes. You will hear about the famous Cosimo I - the first official ruler of Florence. And after exploring all the magnificent halls, paintings, and frescoes, you will climb the bell tower to capture the view of the city from above in a photo and in your heart.
Secret passage
For those who have already visited Palazzo Vecchio, I suggest taking a look at the secret passages. The guide will take you through corridors and chambers usually closed to visitors, and I will translate his story for you. You will also learn how the Duke of Athens "laid the straw" and fled from the rebellious people, walk through the truss system, and see how the canvases are attached in the Hall of the Five Hundred without a single nail.
