About this experience
Small Mantua is a city-state like many in Europe, but it entered the annals of history. During the tour, I will unfold how the ruling Gonzaga family, drawing on the art of the Renaissance, created a global myth about themselves. Metaphors, allegories, and symbolism have always fascinated me. It is on them that I will focus, telling you about that whimsical time when the Gonzagas ruled in Mantua.
What to Expect
- You will find yourself in the Ducal Palace with an area of 34,000 square meters, where representatives of the Gonzaga dynasty lived since the 14th century
- You will see priceless treasures of the palace – Hall of the Spouses, Pisanello’s Room, Old Courtroom, hall with Raphael's tapestries, Labyrinth Room, and much more
- You will admire frescoes by the 15th-century painter Andrea Mantegna, depicting the Gonzaga family: Ludovico and Barbara Brandenburg, relatives, children, and courtiers – all against the backdrop of the classical image of Rome
- Among the floral frieze, you will try to find a self-portrait of Andrea Mantegna himself
- You will glance at other works of art by famous artists, sculptors, and decorators of that time. The Gonzagas were in constant rivalry with the royal courts of Europe, so they commissioned works only from the most famous masters.
- After a brief sightseeing tour of the city, we will visit the Church of Saint Andrew, where vessels with the blood of Jesus Christ are kept
