About this experience
Subotica - a city of bright colors, European atmosphere, and peculiar ornaments! To embrace all this beauty, we will head to the northern border of Serbia and stroll through the local streets - from the grand town hall to the Blue Fountain. You will immerse yourself in the era of Austro-Hungary, take hundreds of photos on Korzo street, and try delicious soup in a cafe near Lake Palic.
What to expect
Serbian corner of Austro-Hungary
Before World War I, Subotica was part of Austro-Hungary, and this part of its history is eloquently reflected in the city's appearance. We will admire the buildings from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries - a period when Europe experienced an unprecedented flourishing of architecture. In our program:
- Town Hall - the grand symbol of Subotica, where city authorities meet and newlyweds tie the knot. You will observe flower decorative elements of ceramics and wrought iron, and find references to Hungarian folklore.
- Reichl Palace - a creation of Hungarian architect Ferenc Raichle. We will walk through the rooms of this house, which is no less interesting than Gaudi's masterpieces. In the courtyard, we will visit a cozy cafe where you can try traditional regional desserts.
- Blue Fountain made of colored ceramics, a work of the Hungarian Zsolnay factory. You will literally touch the beauty and history of the city with your own hands.
- Pedestrian Korzo Street - the main promenade of Subotica, which connects the Town Hall and the railway station. This place is a paradise for photography enthusiasts. At every step, you will encounter interesting spots for vivid photos, and in the inner courtyards and passages, you will find small shops and cafes.
- National Theatre, the oldest in Serbia. We will also pass by the library, a charming late 19th-century building in the neo-Baroque style.
Lunch by the picturesque Palic Lake
In the vicinity of Subotica, we will visit the wonderful Palic Lake - a resort where the European upper class gathered in the early 20th century. You will see the "women's beach" and the music pavilion, and learn how the owner of a Hungarian factory thanked local architects. Before the return journey, we will have lunch in a restaurant overlooking the lake. Be sure to try the local fish soup in a cauldron: for many, it is more delightful than Marseille bouillabaisse!
