About this experience
Subotica is a city of bright colors, European atmosphere, and peculiar ornaments! To fully embrace all this beauty, we will head to the northern border of Serbia and stroll through the local streets - from the grand City Hall to the Blue Fountain. You will immerse yourself in the era of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, take hundreds of photos on the Korzo street, and taste delicious soup at a cafe near Lake Palic.
What to expect
Serbian corner of Austro-Hungary
Before the First World War, Subotica was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and this part of its history is eloquently reflected in the city's appearance. We will admire the buildings from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries - a period when Europe experienced an unprecedented flourishing of architecture. In our program:
- City Hall - a grand symbol of Subotica, where the city authorities convene and newlyweds get married. You will observe the floral decorative elements of ceramics and wrought iron, as well as find references to Hungarian folklore.
- Reichl Palace - a creation by Hungarian architect Ferenc Reichl. We will walk through the rooms of this house, which is no less interesting than Gaudi's masterpieces. In the courtyard, we will visit a cozy cafe where you can try traditional regional desserts.
- Blue Fountain made of colored ceramics, a work of the Hungarian Zsolnay factory. You will be able to literally touch the beauty and history of the city with your own hands.
- Pedestrian Korzo street - the main promenade of Subotica, connecting City Hall and the train station. This place is a paradise for photography enthusiasts. At every step, you will encounter interesting places for vibrant shots, and in the inner courtyards and passages, you will find small shops and cafes.
- National Theatre, the oldest in Serbia. We will also pass by the library, a charming building from the late 19th century in a neo-baroque style.
Lunch at the picturesque Palic Lake
In the vicinity of Subotica, we will visit the wonderful Palic Lake - a resort where the European high society gathered in the early 20th century. You will see the 'ladies' beach' and the music pavilion, and learn how the owner of the Hungarian factory thanked the local architects. Before the return journey, we will have lunch at a restaurant overlooking the lake. Make sure to try the local fish soup cooked in a cauldron - for many, it is more delightful than Marseille's bouillabaisse!
