Sergei Parajanov: the hero of a complex time
About this experience
Walking through the historical center of Tbilisi, we will talk about a person whose name stands alongside Federico Fellini, Andrei Tarkovsky, Jean-Luc Godard, Akira Kurosawa. And it shines just as brightly! You will see the places that nurtured, endowed with life experience, and inspired the creation of masterpieces by one of the most significant film directors of the 20th century.
What to expect
- Meydan Square and Surb Gevorg Church - one of the oldest Armenian churches in Tbilisi. For Parajanov, these places were associated with the king of troubadours, Sayat-Nova. You will learn the history of the legendary ashug (as the poet-improvisers were called), see his monument, and understand what he had in common with Parajanov.
- Shardeni Quarter, also known as Dark Rows - here we will find the monument to the director and talk about his destiny. You will hear the story of the famous prisoner who was sentenced to 5 years of strict regime based on absurd articles but was released early. We will remember how and why this happened.
- Veri Park and the monument to Sofiko Chiaureli - Sergo Parajanov's muse, who played in all of his films. You will learn how her talent manifested in the movies. We will also recall Tiflis - the director's personal elixir of immortality.
- Mtatsminda Mountain, where Parajanov lived. We will visit the house where he was born, listen to the memories of his neighbors, and hear legends about how Parajanov entertained guests.
- Golovin Avenue, also known as the magnificent and luxurious Rustaveli Avenue. We will tell you how it is connected to the director's name and point out places where you can enjoy delicious food, taste the best wine, or chacha.
Organizational details
Additional charge for the ascent to Mtatsminda by funicular - 10 lari/person one way. Alternatively, you can hike up the pilgrim trail of David Garedjinski. For the elderly or those with health issues, it is better to take a taxi for the ascent.
