About this experience
The Colosseum is not just an ancient amphitheater. It is a place with an incredible history that has survived over 2000 years of prosperity, decline, and revival. You will learn how this grand structure came to be, its design, and the spectacles the Romans staged on its arena. I will also show you the ruins of the gladiator school Ludus Magnus and tell you about the living and training conditions of the fighters.
What to Expect
Travel back 2000 years and explore the times when the vain Nero ruled the Roman Empire. He dreamed of building a golden palace - now the Colosseum stands in its place. Together, we will delve into the different eras of its existence. I will tell you:
- What happened in the significant year of 64 AD that led to the construction of the magnificent Colosseum
- What spectacles were held in its arena and how the Romans turned killings into cheerful entertainment
- Why nobody remembered the Colosseum in the Middle Ages and people scavenged the falling pieces
- How during the Enlightenment era, archaeologists of world renown began to seriously study the Colosseum and what they discovered
The Colosseum also has a completely unique design that allowed it to stand for 2 millennia. You will uncover what hypogeum and naumachia are, how builders deepened the space under the arena by 6.5 meters, and why the stage was periodically flooded with water.
Organizational Details
- Colosseum tickets are not included in the price - 18 euros per person
