About this experience
Getting to know Ancient Rome became fashionable starting from the 18th century when wealthy Europeans began sending their children to the Italian capital to acquire knowledge. We will follow the European trend and explore the city - its landmarks and history. What was on the site of the Colosseum? Where and how did unemployed Romans spend their time? Let's find answers to these and many other questions!
What to Expect
Colosseum. You will learn what was on its site and why everything changed overnight. What entertainments were popular in those times and what was the attitude towards death. You will hear myths and legends, as well as historical facts about the favorites of the Roman public - gladiators.
Roman Forum. Daily life of Romans took place here. What was here before and what technologies allowed to build on this land? How did the forum develop with the course of history? I will tell you about this and lead you among monumental ruins to the Temple of Saturn, the Temple of Vesta (you will learn how it is connected to frequent fires on the forum), the Curia Julia, and the Rostra.
Fori Imperiali. We will walk along the street laid by order of Benito Mussolini, full of street artists. The sculptures of the great emperors Augustus, Trajan, Nerva, and consul Julius Caesar give a special charm to the place.
Capitoline Hill. We will climb to where 3 ancient temples of pagan gods stood and see the majestic ruins. I will remind you of the story of Romulus, tell you about priests predicting events by the flight of birds, and the Vestal Virgins. You will enjoy the magical view of the forums and the Palatine Hill, which were chosen by refugees from the perishing Troy.
Theatre of Marcellus. It was here that Emperor Nero performed, as well as theatrical performances and gladiator fights took place. You will appreciate the marble Temple of Apollo and the Portico of Octavia, which Emperor Augustus dedicated to his beloved sister. These ancient monuments are located on the border with the cult district - Jewish Ghetto. They know their way around the kitchen here, so if you wish, we will stop by a tavern to taste the famous Jewish pastries.
Tiber Island. We will walk along the shady alley of ancient plane trees and admire the island with ancient origins.
Forum Boarium. Here you will find temples of extraordinary beauty: the majestic Temple of Portunus and the Temple of Hercules with a round roof and elegant columns.
Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Its elegant portico houses the "Mouth of Truth." We will stop by the ancient mask, and then enter the church itself and descend into the crypt, where you will see the remains of an ancient altar of Hercules.
