About this experience
Alexandria is a real treasure for history, archaeology, and ancient architecture enthusiasts. You will see the Roman amphitheater, Pompey's Pillar, the underground necropolis, and the military fortress. Immerse yourself in the rich past of these places and find out how people lived here many centuries ago: who they prayed to, how they entertained themselves, who they fought with, and how they spent their days.
What to expect
Alexandria through the centuries
I will show you the main attractions of the ancient city. The program includes:
- Kom El Shoqafa Catacombs - a huge underground necropolis discovered relatively recently. I will reveal the circumstances of this discovery and talk about the cremation traditions in Ancient Egypt.
- Roman Amphitheater - through the preserved ancient columns, you will try to imagine how this place looked several centuries ago. How people gathered there and watched performances.
- Pompey's Pillar - a grand structure about 30 meters high, made of pink Aswan granite. You will learn which temple it was a part of and what interesting stories are associated with it.
- Alexandria Library - you will view the restored building of one of the largest libraries in the ancient world from the outside. I will share the history of its creation, demise, and revival.
- Citadel of Qaitbay - a fortress founded at the end of the 15th century on the site of the Alexandria Lighthouse. You will hear about the role it played in world military history.
